Layla BasicArabic is Mohammed Isam’s traditional Naskh member of the Layla project. Its curves give continuous Arabic text a more familiar reading rhythm than the project’s decorative faces. The supplied version 2.0 provides one Regular weight, 400, for layouts that can build their hierarchy without several font weights.

BasicArabic is a family name

The name identifies this particular design, not a promise that the file only contains isolated Arabic letters. Contextual substitutions provide joining forms. To assess the result, set a real paragraph with punctuation and numerals, then compare line length and leading at the size you intend to print. A heading alone cannot establish how a book page will feel.

Within the Naskh collection, Amiri offers a useful comparison for the color and rhythm of a printed page. Try Noto Naskh Arabic as another reference for everyday text sizes and real weight changes. Layla BasicArabic’s particular drawing is the reason to choose it; one Regular file does not supply a complete multiweight publishing system.

Present characters do not guarantee every mark combination

The original includes Arabic, common Persian letters, Basic Latin, Western numerals, and Arabic vowel marks. Tested words form initial, medial, and final glyphs as well as lam-alef. The file has no GPOS table, so a shaping engine may rely on fallback positioning for marks. Review fully vocalized lines closely; these tests do not establish suitability for complex Quranic text or complete Urdu behavior.

For Arabic print layouts, compare its included Latin with Source Serif 4 for accompanying English. The built-in Latin and numerals are credited to Basharat Ali’s Urdu Khush Khati. Keep enough leading for marks and inspect a printed paragraph before tightening the page.

Files and permitted reuse

Prepare your sample with the Arabic keyboard and follow the font installation guide. The ZIP contains the original TTF, project log, copyright notice, and exact SIL OFL 1.1 license text. For an older screen-oriented comparison, Droid Arabic Naskh supplies two static weights without a complete Latin alphabet; test its spacing separately from Layla BasicArabic.
