Japan: thin Arabic display letters with tall stems

Japan is an Arabic display font from the historical Arabeyes collection. Its thin horizontal strokes and tall stems give a short heading a striking structure, especially when the design leaves room around the word.

The name does not mean Japanese coverage

This file contains Arabic and Latin characters, not Japanese kana or CJK ideographs. Choose it for the actual letterforms in the preview rather than assuming language support or a documented cultural origin from the family name.

Try a large poster title first. Examine the narrow strokes and the ends of each word after reducing the export. The design is specialized: a successful heading at a large size does not make it a suitable choice for small mobile labels or long paragraphs.

For Latin supporting copy, compare the included letters with Source Sans 3. A quieter companion can carry the practical information while the Arabic title keeps its pronounced vertical rhythm.

Original Regular file and comparison

The download supplies ae_Japan.ttf at upright weight 400 from Arabeyes 2.0. The original internal string remains “Version 1; May 20, 2003”. Metadata names Future Soft Egypt as manufacturer and credits regeneration to Nadim Shaikli; this is separate from the distribution number.

Western and Arabic-Indic digits and ordinary Arabic diacritical signs are present alongside Arabic and Latin. The Persian alphabet is incomplete. Joined and marked phrases were checked with HarfBuzz and Chrome; test your own text and export too.

License and embedding

The GPL version 2 includes an exception for embedding in documents. Embedding alone does not put the document under the GPL. The ZIP retains the original TTF, corresponding SFD, processing drivers and exact README/COPYING notices with Free UCS attribution.
