Alyamama is a free variable Naskh family designed by Yazeed Omar at Mestara Type. Its Arabic combines a classical structure with sharp, simplified strokes, while its Latin glyphs derive from UNAL Ancízar.
Judge the transition from title to text
Start with an editorial heading and a short paragraph below it. A design with marked stroke contrast needs checking at both sizes: a strong title sample does not establish that small supporting copy has enough detail on every output device.
The original variable font starts at a default weight of 300, rather than the common 400 setting. Use that fact when opening it in a design application and comparing with the preview selector. For an advertisement or a sign, test the final word lengths and viewing distance. For a bilingual document, begin with the included Latin and compare the visual size and line spacing of each script.
Variable files and preview weights
The ZIP contains 1 original variable TTF file, version 1.213. Axis ranges, with defaults in parentheses: wght 300–900 (300). The preview supplies 7 static styles, covering weights 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900. Compatible software can select intermediate weights from the original file.
The documented coverage here is Arabic and Latin. Test actual words, vowel marks and mixed-direction lines in the application you will use. A font file cannot determine paragraph direction or replace a shaping engine.
For another Persian and Arabic Naskh reading study, compare Shahab’s single regular release. It has no complete Latin alphabet or designed bold; use a final-size print proof rather than assuming Alyamama’s hierarchy transfers unchanged.
License and comparison
SIL Open Font License 1.1 permits personal and commercial use, embedding and redistribution under its terms. The ZIP includes the exact license and the original files. Keep the license when redistributing the font; selling the font by itself is prohibited.
