Beiruti is a free Arabic and Latin variable family from Boutros Fonts. Arlette Boutros designed the Arabic and Volker Schnebel the Latin, combining a geometric approach with references to Arabic calligraphy.
Compare the screen and the printed page
The built-in Latin gives a starting point for bilingual brochures, product headings and websites. Test a real heading next to its translation, then a smaller paragraph. Adjust their sizes by appearance rather than requiring identical numeric values.
The variable weight range runs from 200 to 900. Heavy headings can establish a clear level above text, but check narrow counters and the spacing of repeated labels at small sizes. A light weight that looks attractive on a large monitor also needs a print test if it will appear in a leaflet. The download identifies the Beiruti family specifically; it should not be confused with other Boutros branded products.
Variable files and preview weights
The ZIP contains 1 original variable TTF file, version 1.41. Axis ranges, with defaults in parentheses: wght 200–900 (400). The preview supplies 8 static styles, covering weights 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900. Compatible software can select intermediate weights from the original file.
The documented coverage here is Arabic and Latin. Test actual words, vowel marks and mixed-direction lines in the application you will use. A font file cannot determine paragraph direction or replace a shaping engine.
Where a brochure heading must share limited vertical space with a caption, inspect Changa’s short ascenders and descenders. Proof the marked text before tightening line spacing; compact proportions do not guarantee collision-free lines.
License and comparison
SIL Open Font License 1.1 permits personal and commercial use, embedding and redistribution under its terms. The ZIP includes the exact license and the original files. Keep the license when redistributing the font; selling the font by itself is prohibited.
