GNU Unifont aims to show an identifiable character when another font would leave a missing-glyph box. Its design uses an 8- or 16-pixel-wide grid, 16 pixels tall. For Arabic, treat it as a technical fallback or a retro experiment with significant shaping limits.

What the standard download contains

This package supplies the standard 18.0.01 OTF in Regular 400, targeting Unicode’s Basic Multilingual Plane. It does not include the separate Upper files or Japanese variants. The original covers much more than the Arabic and Basic Latin subset used by this site’s preview.

Dual width is not the same as one universal cell per character. In the tested samples, Arabic and Latin advances use the half-width cell, while a Chinese ideograph can use the full width. Combining marks also need separate handling. Inspect actual mixed text before relying on column counts.

Tested joining is not full Arabic typesetting

Chrome and HarfBuzz join the tested words by using available Arabic presentation forms. However, the font’s GSUB table supplies no Arabic shaping features, and GPOS is empty. The upstream project explicitly describes Unifont as a last resort for complex scripts. It is not a recommendation for extended Arabic reading or vocalized passages.

For a web diagnostic tool, use it as fallback behind a font suited to the actual text. Compare Kawkab Mono when the main requirement is an editor with Arabic comments. For a deliberately modular heading, Handjet explores repeated elements in another way. Unifont’s built-in Latin can accompany its other characters in a diagnostic display.

Try the original with its notices

Browse the display collection, prepare a sample using the Arabic keyboard, and follow the font installation guide. Unifont is a collective project begun by Roman Czyborra and developed with Paul Hardy and other contributors. It offers dual licensing; this download uses OFL 1.1 and retains the original notices, including the parallel GNU license statement.
