Cascadia Code is Microsoft’s free coding font, with an Arabic design by Mohamad Dakak alongside Aaron Bell’s work on the family. It is worth trying when your source code includes Arabic comments or Urdu text and you want them to share a fixed-width environment with Latin identifiers.

Arabic shaping within a coding grid

The Arabic component arrived in release 2106.17. Cascadia Code combines contextual Arabic forms with ligatures designed for this environment; it also has programming ligatures that can display a sequence such as != as a combined sign. The stored characters remain the same. Their appearance depends on your editor’s shaping and OpenType support.

Start with a real comment, a function name, parentheses and a number on the same line. Check cursor movement, selection and copying as well as appearance. A monospaced font does not determine the direction of a paragraph or make every editor handle mixed Arabic and Latin in the same way.

Seven preview weights, one original TTF

This download contains the upright CascadiaCode.ttf, version 2407.024, from Microsoft’s release 2407.24. Its variable weight axis runs from 200 to 700, with a default of 400. The preview offers seven static positions: 200, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600 and 700. Weight 350 is a named instance in the original file, not an extra font added to the ZIP.

The original file supports Arabic, Latin and Urdu; the web previews are subsets for this page. The official italic file does not contain Arabic characters, so it is excluded here. If your editor uses italics for comments, check which font actually renders the Arabic instead of assuming it is Cascadia’s italic.

Cascadia Code or Cascadia Mono?

Microsoft also distributes Cascadia Mono without programming ligatures and with a simpler Arabic composition. It belongs to the same project, but its files are not in this download. The PL and NF variants are separate selections too; this ZIP supplies the standard upright Code file.

Compare Kawkab Mono on the same Arabic comment, then Thabit on a plain-text table. For proportional labels around the editor, compare Noto Sans Arabic rather than expecting the coding grid to suit every menu.

Limits and license

Cascadia’s release notes explicitly say its Arabic is not intended for Quranic typesetting. Ordinary vowel marks are present, but they do not establish support for a complete Quranic text. Release 2407.24 also fixes hinting on some Arabic glyphs; test the downloaded file at your actual editor size.

The SIL Open Font License 1.1 permits personal and commercial use, embedding and redistribution under its conditions. The ZIP includes the original variable TTF and the exact license. Keep that license with redistributed files, respect the reserved name Cascadia Code when distributing modifications, and do not sell the font by itself.
