Noto Sans Arabic

Noto Sans Arabic is a free variable family in Google’s Noto collection. It offers weight and width axes for Arabic-script text, making it a candidate for multilingual web interfaces and document systems.

Specify the axes, not just the family name

The version 2.012 variable TTF has wght from 100 to 900 and wdth from 62.5 to 100. Defaults are weight 400 and width 100. Record the selected values when sharing a design so another application does not silently return to the default position.

The preview offers nine weights in steps of 100 at width 100. Its controls do not change width. The ZIP delivers one original variable file with both axes intact; use compatible software to choose a condensed width or an intermediate weight.

Use width as a design choice

Test the longest product labels and several lines of reading text before choosing a narrower width. A condensed setting changes the rhythm and density of a component. It should not become an automatic fix for every string that exceeds a container.

Include punctuation, numbers and marked words in the test. The supplied file covers Arabic, Latin, Persian and Urdu, but the actual wording, shaping and direction settings still need checking in the target application.

Compare roles across a product

Compare IBM Plex Sans Arabic for another product-oriented family and Almarai for a more compact weight selection. Try Cairo if the headings need a different Kufi-based voice.

Start with the built-in Latin for a bilingual prototype. If a separate Latin family is mandated, compare visual size and stroke weight inside a complete form or text panel. Check the smallest helper text as carefully as the main heading.

Noto Sans Arabic UI is not bundled

Google Fonts describes Noto Sans Arabic UI separately for app and website interfaces. This package contains Noto Sans Arabic. Keep the complete name and version in an asset inventory, and review wrapping and spacing when switching between families.

The ZIP contains the original variable TTF and SIL Open Font License 1.1. Personal and commercial use, embedding and redistribution are permitted under its terms. Retain the license with redistributed files; selling the font by itself is prohibited.
