Amiri Typewriter gives Arabic a restrained, mechanical rhythm inspired by older typewriters. Khaled Hosny designed it as a companion to Amiri, with Regular and Bold styles for short passages, annotations, and layouts that need an intentionally typed appearance.

What changes from the book face

The relationship to Amiri’s book typography does not make the two families interchangeable. Typewriter simplifies contextual letter shapes: many isolated and final letters share a form, as do many initial and medial letters. The result belongs near Naskh typography, but its repeating rhythm is more useful than ornamental variation when you want a typed voice.

Version 1.1 provides weights 400 and 700. The files include Arabic, Latin, common Persian and Urdu letters, Arabic vowel marks, and both Western and Arabic digits. Character presence is a starting point; proofread the actual language and mark combinations in the application you plan to use.

Why fixed advance does not mean perfect columns

The project describes equal glyph advances with an exception in the visible drawing: wide letters can extend beyond their boxes. That makes a strict promise of terminal alignment misleading. Test any dense table yourself, and compare Kawkab Mono when aligned columns matter more than the typewriter effect.

For Arabic and Latin layouts, the included Latin is the first pairing to try. Fira Mono is another candidate for separate technical labels; match visible size rather than applying identical point sizes blindly. Keep sufficient line spacing around vocalized Arabic and check whether overhangs reach neighboring content.

Files, typing, and license

Use the Arabic keyboard to prepare your sample and the Arabic font installation guide to load the original TTF files. The SIL Open Font License 1.1 allows commercial work and redistribution with the license included. Its Fira Reserved Font Name notice remains part of the supplied license.

Compare FreeMono’s fixed-pitch Arabic using the same joined words. Its Arabic selection has only Regular 400, while Amiri Typewriter supplies 400 and 700; include your real heading hierarchy when assessing the grid.
