Changa is a free variable Arabic and Latin font by Eduardo Tunni. Its compact proportions make it worth testing when a heading and its supporting labels need to share limited vertical space.
Compact does not mean no line spacing
The project describes short ascenders and descenders and a Latin design organized around a square. These features suggest a compact text setting, but the final line height still needs testing with Arabic vowel marks, mixed scripts and the longest labels in your layout.
Use a moderate weight for repeated navigation and a stronger one for a short title. Compare several lines rather than reducing the space until the first sample just fits. Changa One is a separate, Latin-only display family; its name does not identify the Arabic family supplied here. The ZIP contains Changa, with its variable weight axis.
Variable files and preview weights
The ZIP contains 1 original variable TTF file, version 3.003. Axis ranges, with defaults in parentheses: wght 200–800 (400). The preview supplies 7 static styles, covering weights 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800. Compatible software can select intermediate weights from the original file.
The documented coverage here is Arabic and Latin. Test actual words, vowel marks and mixed-direction lines in the application you will use. A font file cannot determine paragraph direction or replace a shaping engine.
To reconsider a compact bilingual heading, compare Beiruti’s geometric Arabic and coordinated Latin. Its range extends to 900, beyond Changa’s 800; judge the actual density instead of equating equal numeric weights.
License and comparison
SIL Open Font License 1.1 permits personal and commercial use, embedding and redistribution under its terms. The ZIP includes the exact license and the original files. Keep the license when redistributing the font; selling the font by itself is prohibited.
