FreeMono gives Arabic a linear drawing on a fixed-pitch grid alongside Latin. This download selects the official Regular file from the May 3, 2012 GNU FreeFont release. It is a candidate for testing Arabic comments and technical text where a deliberate grid matters more than the rhythm of a book face.

Only Regular contains Arabic in this selection

The package supplies FreeMono.ttf at weight 400. Bold and oblique files from this GNU edition do not contain Arabic and are not offered here as Arabic styles. FreeMono’s Arabic outlines differ from FreeSerif’s, despite the families sharing the project’s history and some contribution sources. The distinction is visible in both the stroke construction and the fixed spacing.

Compare Kawkab Mono for another approach to fixed-pitch Arabic and Thabit for a different grid rhythm. The modern Arabic collection can also help you choose a proportional companion for interface labels. A menu and an editable code area need not use the same spacing system.

Glyph cells are not a Unicode character counter

In the tested samples, shaped letters advance by 600 units on a 1000-unit em. Arabic vowel marks have zero advance, and lam-alef can become a single glyph. Counting visible cells therefore does not reliably count the underlying characters. Test cursor movement, columns, and mixed punctuation in the editor you actually use.

The file contains Arabic, Basic Latin, common Persian letters, and Arabic vowel marks. For a web tool, begin with the included Latin. Source Code Pro is another pairing to test for separate Latin lines. Neither option changes the bidirectional ordering rules or replaces an application’s paragraph-direction settings.

Original files and corresponding sources

GNU FreeFont credits a collective of contributors, including Arabic work associated with Omega and Abbas Izad. The download keeps the notices, original TTF, corresponding sources, and preview-processing script. GPL 3 or later includes an exception for embedding the unmodified font in documents. Prepare a sample with the Arabic keyboard, then follow the installation guide.

For missing-character diagnostics rather than a continuous Arabic paragraph, compare GNU Unifont. Its standard file offers broad Unicode fallback with two nominal widths; that coverage does not establish complete Arabic composition or a universal one-cell grid.
