AQ Normal Sans: nine weights for Arabic interfaces

AQ Normal Sans is a free family by Azad Qalam for projects combining Arabic, Persian and Latin text. Its nine upright weights let you compare a light heading, regular labels and a stronger navigation style within the same design.

Nine static weights, one family

This download provides the official static TTF files, version 1.000, from Thin 100 to Black 900 in steps of 100. Regular is 400 and Bold is 700. The source project also supplies a variable font, but this ZIP contains the nine static originals. Choose those files explicitly when installing the family or defining a website’s weight mapping.

For a bilingual interface, begin with the actual menu labels, digits, punctuation and longest button text. Compare the Arabic and Latin portions at their intended sizes before choosing a weight. A matching numerical weight does not guarantee identical apparent darkness across scripts.

Arabic and Persian text to test

The supplied files contain Arabic letters, Persian letters, basic Latin and ordinary Arabic vowel marks. That coverage supports trying everyday text; it does not establish suitability for Quranic composition or every language using Arabic script. Check stacked marks, line spacing and mixed-direction labels in the application where the font will run.

Compare Noto Sans Arabic when you need another proportional interface family. For a different compact sans drawing, try Almarai on the same paragraph. If you pair a separate Latin font such as Inter, adjust its size and baseline against the Arabic sample rather than assuming equal CSS sizes will align.

Download and licensing

The SIL Open Font License 1.1 permits personal and commercial use, embedding and redistribution under its conditions. Keep the included license with redistributed files. AQ, AzadQalam and Azad Qalam are reserved names for modified versions; the package here retains the official originals.
