Playpen Sans Arabic is a free handwriting family from TypeTogether, with credits including Azza Alameddine, Laura Meseguer, Veronika Burian and José Scaglione. It brings a casual handwritten voice to Arabic and Latin text.

Informal lettering with contextual variation

The design includes alternate letter shapes selected through OpenType behavior. Repeated letters can therefore look less mechanically identical in a compatible application. Test a full sentence, not just an isolated alphabet, to see how those substitutions behave.

It is a candidate for children’s book captions, activity sheets and friendly invitations. Research behind the wider Playpen project concerns handwriting education; that does not make every font setting a prescribed Arabic teaching model. Choose shapes that match the learner’s curriculum, and check whether optional Ruq’ah forms are appropriate. The package is the Arabic family, rather than every script family in the Playpen superfamily.

Variable files and preview weights

The ZIP contains 1 original variable TTF file, version 2.000. Axis ranges, with defaults in parentheses: wght 100–800 (400). The preview supplies 8 static styles, covering weights 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800. Compatible software can select intermediate weights from the original file.

The documented coverage here is Arabic and Latin. Test actual words, vowel marks and mixed-direction lines in the application you will use. A font file cannot determine paragraph direction or replace a shaping engine.

For the activity sheet’s title, try Baloo Bhaijaan 2’s rounded display forms beside Playpen’s handwritten captions. Compare hierarchy on the printed sheet without presenting Baloo as a model for handwriting practice.

License and comparison

SIL Open Font License 1.1 permits personal and commercial use, embedding and redistribution under its terms. The ZIP includes the exact license and the original files. Keep the license when redistributing the font; selling the font by itself is prohibited.

Compare Tajawal for the instructional text beside handwritten captions, and Lalezar for a separate, stronger display heading. Browse Arabic handwriting fonts and children’s books and school material. Prepare a sample with the Arabic keyboard and the Arabic font selection guide. See the official source at the supplied revision.
